The Sapo National Park (the Park) was established in 1983 by an Act of the legislature setting aside 323,075 acres of forest for protection, conservation and sustainable utilization of its resources. The designation as a National Park reflects the Park's location at the core of an immense forest block of the Upper Guinea Forest ecosystem.
Following socio-economic and biological surveys and after consultation with the local community stressed the need to maintain the integrity of the Park, an Act for the Extension of the Sapo Park was enacted and approved on October 10, 2003, extending the dimension of the Park to 445,667 acres.
