According to the Fuel Quality Directive and the Renewable Energy Directive, operators can use voluntary certification schemes recognised by the European Commission as proof of compliance with sustainability criteria. Those schemes are developed and managed by private parties with no control by the Commssion or other public authority.
In this briefing we argue that only sound and reliable schemes can be used to show compliance with the Directives’ sustainability criteria.
