ClientEarth have produced a briefing that looks at how the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), which comes into effect in January 2014, will change December Council meetings. The new CFP means the Council legally has to ensure fishing opportunities (i.e. catch limits or fishing days) will be set by reference to Maximum Sustainable Yield. This will make it far more difficult for the Council to ignore scientific advice as they traditionally have done in the past (between 2004 and 2009 half of fishing limits were set higher than scientific advice).
