Food Contact Materials and Public Health: Shortcomings of current EU Legislation

At the academic workshop “Future of food”, organised by the Graduate Institute (Geneva), ClientEarth chemicals law and policy advisor Lara Fornabaio showed how the current EU regulation on food contact materials (FCMs) is not sufficient to prevent harmful chemicals to end up into our food. While attention is usually focused on food packaging, food processing equipment as well can be a source of exposure to dangerous chemicals such as endocrine disruptors. The ongoing public consultation on the FCMs regulation is an opportunity to increase the level of protection from harmful chemicals.
