Joint NGO recommendations on the setting of Northeast Atlantic fishing opportunities for 2021

These joint NGO recommendations to the Council of EU fisheries ministers and the European Commission were co-signed by ClientEarth, Pew Charitable Trusts, Oceana, Seas At Risk, Fisheries Secretariat and Our Fish. In this document, we jointly call on the European Commission and EU fisheries ministers to set fishing opportunities for 2021 in line with the requirements and objectives of the CFP, in order to restore and maintain fish populations above biomass levels capable of producing the maximum sustainable yield (MSY). We provide clear recommendations regarding

  • the setting of Total Allowable Catches (TACs) for 2021,
  • the correct implementation of the landing obligation, and
  • improvements of the transparency of the TAC-setting process.

The fishing opportunities agreed this year for 2021 are particularly crucial, since they represent the key chance for decision-makers to honour their commitment to finally ending overfishing, after missing the CFP’s legal MSY deadline by 2020 last year.
