Every two years, the fisheries ministers from all EU Member States meet to set the Total Allowable Catches (TACs) for certain deep-sea fish stocks for the following two years. In the lead-up to the 2018 November Council meeting where the TACs for 2019 and 2020 will be set, ClientEarth has sent a letter with joint NGO recommendations to the EU fisheries ministers, together with The Pew Charitable Trusts, Seas At Risk, Oceana, The Fisheries Secretariat, Our Fish, Sciaena, Dutch Elasmobranch Society, BirdWatch Ireland and Fundació ENT.
This year’s November Council meeting is particularly crucial, since it represents the last opportunity, before the legal 2020 deadline to end overfishing, for EU fisheries ministers to set TACs in line with the objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy.
